Gators put up 63 against Arkansas, but still give up 35 to ex-Gator QB Feleipe Franks. Kyle Trask throws for 356 yards and 6 TD's, five of which were in the first half. He now has 28 td's in 6 games. I mourn the death of defense.

I mourn the death of defense. Really. The disruption caused to the record books will be much like that of the steroid era of baseball of recent vintage. For a host of present and future generations the greatness of old time quarterbacks and receivers will become marginalized. Without consistent rules and relatively consistent conditions there is no legitimate measuring stick by which to judge the greatness of Johnny Unitas, Bart Starr and even Terry Bradshaw or Joe Montana. Well, take it from me, kids... it you put those guys into today’s era, they’d be right at the top of the page...

I mourn the death of defense. Saban has been saying that for years.... and when he accepted that Ds no longer win championships (around 2013) he went on to win 3 more titles. I remember when BYU-San Diego St games used to have basketball scores and I was awestruck (early 90s)... now pretty much every CFB game has a basketball score.

One of the biggest differences between today's game and the past is the hits the QB's take or don't take after throwing the ball. I was watching highlights of one of the Super Bowls from the 70's between Pittsburgh and Dallas and the hits that both Bradshaw and Staubach took would get you tossed from today's game and maybe even suspended. There were just normal hits back then, including head shots and guys diving into their knees.

There were just normal hits back then, including head shots and guys diving into their knees. There also used to be no such thing as a defenseless receiver, and the SEC was the last bastion of the running game over the passing game. Offense and offensive coaching are simply more sophisticated than defenses can handle these days. Even the best defensive schemes cannot hold offenses down for four quarters, unless turnovers decrease possessions of the offense.

Well, my Louisiana State University’s Fighting Tigers have had a tough season thus far, and it just got harder. Terrace Marshall has opted out for the rest of this season to declare for the NFL Draft and begin his career as a professional football player. Marshall has 48 receptions for 731 yards and 10 touchdowns in 7 games. Of course, he already had 7 touchdowns in the first three games before quarterback Miles Brennan was hurt, missing the last four games (and likely the rest of the season). LSU has had two true freshmen trying to man the QB position, and it hasn’t been pretty for several reasons. Nevertheless, top ranked Alabama comes to Baton Rouge this weekend to avenge last season’s defeat at Tuscaloosa. The final score could bring an earthquake to the Bayou State. JaMarr Chase was the best WR in college football last year (he opted out also, just before the first game of this season), and Terrace Marshall is not far behind. They could both go in the first round.

The only thing worse than Alabama wide receiver Davonte Smith torching the LSU Tigers for 231 yards and 3 touchdowns? He’s from Louisiana. So are Dylan Moses and Christopher Allen, the Tide’s best linebackers. Insult, meet injury.

I was at the game last year... thankfully I was sitting in the Zone so alcohol flowed freely and did not remember much about the game besides Alabama losing.

Watched Florida play Tennessee yesterday and the Gators defense again started out as slow and unprepared as they have just about every game. They better get it together or Alabama will have the game wrapped up by halftime. I hope defensive coordinator Todd Grantham gets fired after this season.

I don’t see how they can be expected to tackle or catch passes...

Offense is great, defense looks confused, with no pass rush and poor tackling. Then again, if Bama's defense decides not to show up, could be a shoot out.

Josh Reed was born and raised in Rayne, Louisiana (Home of the Frog Festival) about thirty miles from where I grew up. Rohan Gravy, as we fondly refer to him, is Jamaican. He still holds the LSU record of 528 passing yards in that single game against Alabama. That’s about the only record Joe Burrow did not break last year.
