This team just can’t seem to keep a rally moving...We get a run and... fizzle...

I don’t buy this stuff they’re shoveling about pitching being so much better than ten years ago or in the past. Hitters swinging from their butts, having no two-strike approach, and losing the shame of striking out are perfectly reasonable explanations for the degradation of hitting and batting average. Also, a generation of hitters have been indoctrinated that batting average is meaningless and slugging and launch angle should be the focus. . To me it’s obvious that when you expand the bullpen to eight relievers, you’ve got some very hittable pitchers in that pen. At least one maybe two of them belong in the minors and another one might be a marginal MLB pitcher. The hitters approach is indeed BS... look at Frazier, pulling the ball, swing hard as he can. And as expected... leaves Urshela at second base hitting in front of him... When there were 16 teams there were always roughly 160 pitchers at any given time. And typically those 9 and 10 mutts didn't see much action. Today there are roughly 390 pitchers, all of whom see plenty of action. I know there is a larger population base to draw from and wider international participation. But on the other hand many more top athletes go into other sports, especially the NFL and NBA, than was the case back then. I find it hard to believe that the bottom 100 pitchers today are vastly superior to pitcher 160 back in the day.

When I coached high school basketball, one of the main guys on the team was specifically a role player: great defender, tough rebounder, but not much in the way of skills. Essentially, wooden hands. However, he had an unrealistic opinion of his own ability. During late, critical possessions, his role was strongly reinforced: “Unless you have an open layup, pass the ball to a shooter.” When he nevertheless attempted to take shots, he faced a deluge of pointed remonstration. The next such situation, when the head coach looked at him, he said, “I know, Coach. Only if I have an open layup.” The coach, a Beaumont native, said calmly in his Texas accent, “Son, you don’t think about the bucket unless you’re looking down in it.”

I think they throw harder, but I’ve never seen a pitcher not named Mariano Rivera make a career on one pitch. I don’t get it, other than the bats are too light, and the goal too singular for the batters...

The Yankee lineup is getting dominated by one of the worst pitchers in the AL. Same story, different day.

Talk about a couple of lame at bats to end the inning. Man this is putrid baseball.

Rizz, your role player sounds like me when I played high school basketball. Except that I was well aware of my limitations.

Talk about a couple of lame at bats to end the inning. Man this is putrid baseball. Three hits in six innings innings, and there’s nothing comparable to Cole throwing for the Rays.
