other than the RH batters at 9 and 1, a perfect R/L lineup. verdugo did well batting 4th last nite, so keep it going. obviously pretty much everyone had good games, let's hope they saved some hits for today. good to see trevino in there after his 18 pitch soft toss stint last nite . wells who was just starting to find his stroke sits w trevino getting the nod against a RH pitcher. wells had started the previous 2 games.
rookie tobias myers makes his 2nd mlb start. pitched 5 solid innings 1st time out. not a particularly hard thrower (93 mph) but mixes in lots of sliders, cutters, curves and the occasional change.

OK, finally got my preview work done, so here it all is:
Tobias Myers starts for the Brewers. He was a 6th round pick of the Orioles in 2016, and was traded to the Rays, and traded from the Rays to the Indias a year later. Five years after that he was purchased by the Giants, who left him on waivers for the White Sox to pick up later that year. At the end of 2022, he was six-year minor league free agent and signed with the Brewers. As you might expect after bouncing through five organizations, there was nothing exceptional in his minor league career: 17 relief appearances, 123 starts, a 4.25 ERA. He did strike out a batter an inning, but his H/9, BB/9 and HR/9 numbers were below average for a minor league pitching prospect. He was never listed in the top 100 of any of the major top 100 lists. This year, before being called up, he was 1-1 in 3 starts, 16 1/3 innings, 11 hits, 3 runs, all earned, 1 HR and 22 K's, with an ERA of 1.62. Suffering a couple of injuries, and with DL Hall not getting it done, they called him up.
This is his 2nd major league start. In his first start, he pitched a solid five innings against the Pirates in Pittsburgh, but was outdueled by Pirate lefty Bailey Falter in a 2-1 loss. He gave up a leadoff HR to Andrew McCutchen in the 1st, then shut them down for 5 innings. Over 83 pitches, he gave up 4 hits, no more runs, walked 1 and struck out 4. Obviously, he's never faced the Yankees before.
Repertoire: It's only 1 game's worth of numbers, but his pitch mix against the Pirates seems to show him to be yet another "kitchen sink" 5-pitch righty. With no past data to look at, I have no idea if the Brewers tweaked his repertoire this spring. Against the Pirates, the FB averaged 93, and he threw 31 of them, the cutter was 88-89 and he threw 20 of them, the curve was 78-9 and he threw 17 of them, the slider was 84-5 and he threw 11 of them, and he threw 4 changeups at an average velo of 81.
One last thing about Myers: believe it or not, Baseball Reference says he's the first and only player named "Tobias" in MLB history. First name or last name.

For the Yankees, Marcus Stroman goes in the rubber match. His pitched solidly so far this season, striking out more batters than in past years, but with a higher HR rate that could be just a small sample size aberration. Even in the games where he's struggled, he's fought hard to keep the Yanks at least in the game with a fighting chance to rally. In 5 starts, he's 2-1 with a 2.83 ERA. In 27 2/3 innings, he's allowed 24 hits, 12 runs, 9 earned, 4 HR, 10 BB with 28 K's. His WHIP so far is a decent 1.229.
Today's game is his 8th career start against the Brewers. He's pitched very well against them: 3-1 with a 2.58 ERA. In 45 1/3 innings, he's allowed just 24 hits, 13 runs, all earned, 5 HR, and 20 BB, with 36 K's. Thanks to the very low hit rate, hjs WHIP vs. Milwaukee is an outstanding 0.971. Last year he faced them twice. In the first game on Opening Day, he shut them down in Miller Park for 6 innings, earning the win. The 2nd game was at home, and after he was being bothered by his arm injury, and they got him for 4 runs, 4 hits, 4 BB and a HR in 5 innings in a no-decision. The Brewers team quadruple slash line against Stroman is .159/.257/.291/.549.

Yanks' lineup vs. Ross
As Myers has pitched just one game in his MLB career, and none of the Yankeed on the current roster were playing for the Pirates 5 days ago, none of them has ever faced Myers in the majors. Duh.
==============
Brewers' lineup vs. Stroman
On the other hand, the Brewers have faced Stroman seven times before, so:
Frelick has never faced Stroman Contreras has faced him 3 times and struck out all 3 times Adames has a great record against him, 8-17 with 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 BB and 3 K Bauers is 1-8 with a double, 1 BB and 2 K Sanchez is 2-10 with 1 BB and 4 K Perkins has never faced him Turang is 1-4 against him Ortiz and Chourio have never faced him.
On the bench, Miller is 1-3 vs. Stroman with 2 K, and Wiemer is 1-2 with an RBI and a BB

Last night, the Yanks whalloped the Brewers 15-3, in just the 2nd Yankee game in history in which both sides used a position player to pitch. The O's strong lineup did what the Yankees, couldn't: beat up JP Sears for 3 HR and 5 runs in 6 1/3 innings on their way to a 7-0 shutout over the A's. The Red Sox put an even worse beating on the Cubs than the Yanks put on the Brewers, annihilating them 17-0. The Dodgers beat the Jays again, 4-2 and the Rays lost a back and forth struggle with the White Sox, scoring the ghost runner in the 10th to take a 7-6 lead, but giving 2 back in the bottom to lose 8-7. Ex-Yankee Andrew Benintendi did his old team a favor with a walkoff HR with 1 out, scoring the ghost runner and himself for the win.
===============
Last nights scores lead right into the The Sunday Standingsā¢ (Before the start of play today, Sunday the 28th):
After last night's game, the AL East looks like this: The O's lead the Yanks by percentage points, but both teams are tied for first at 8 games over .500, the O's at 17-9, the Yanks at 18-10. The Sox are 2 games over .500 and 3 games back in 3rd, Having both had bad weeks, the Rays and Jays are now both 2 games under, 2 behind the Sox and 5 in back of the Yanks. The Jays have lost 5 in a row, and the Rays have lost 5 of their last 6.
I'll get to the other divisions in the game thread in the early innings as we go along.

One last pre-game comment. Because of last night's blowout, the Brewers will have all of their relievers ready today, including two days of rest for their top guns: Megill, Payamps and Uribe. Yanks had better get right about the business of beating up Myers, because with all "weapons loaded" Murphy will not have a long leash on him today.

Oh, if any of you were wondering...
It's a pain on myself (and everyone else) to give both the Leaders and the Standings on the same day. So why the Leaders on Saturday (through Friday's games) and the Standing on Sunday (through Saturday's games)?
The answer is an Old Dinosaur Media Tradition. Back when I was younger and even qwiker, back before even desktop computers, cellphones or even widespread cable television, the archaic institution known as the Daily Newspaper (and yes, the actual new York Daily News) in their Sunday editions would published the MLB stats for all qualified hitters and pitchers (BAVG qualified and ERA qualified), and when they had column space amongst all the advertising on the sports pages, a limited list of league leaders in both leagues for the most important stat categories.
Because the stats and leaders "went to bed" late Friday for the Sunday edition, the stats included games up to Friday night only. So none of the Saturday games in the stats and leaders. I am, in my own nostalgic way continuing that tradition, first in the YES game thread, and now, here in my new Yankees board home.

Knicks down by 5 with 3 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. Brunson having a huge game so far, but the Knicks not hitting their threes.

FB near middle at 92. Swung on and missed, 0-1 FB or sinker runs in on him a bit, he's jammed and popped to right, Chourio catches, 1 down.
