You know you are old if you remember when there were four major bowls, all played on New Year's Day. The Orange Bowl (Big Eight, now Big 12 champ versus at-large opponent) came on at noon. The Sugar Bowl (SEC champ versus at-large opponent) came on at 1, the Cotton Bowl (the late lamented Southwest Conference champ versus at-large opponent) came on at 2 and the Rose Bowl (Big Ten champ versus Pac 8 champ) came on at 5.
The next rung down was the Gator Bowl, played on New Year's Eve, usually the ACC champ versus an at-large opponent.
There were a handful of other less prestigious bowls like the Sun Bowl, Liberty Bowl and Bluebonnet Bowl, and that was pretty much it until the late 60s.
One of the few bowl games I ever attended was the very first Liberty Bowl, which was held in a freezing cold Municipal Stadium in Philadelphia just before Christmas in 1959. Penn State, coached by Rip Engle, beat Alabama 7-0. Bama had a second-year coach named Bear Bryant.

I remember the Fiesta Bowl becoming the 5th major bowl on New Years Day and the game's ability to match up any two teams willing to play each other, regardless if they were in a conference or an independent. The bowl became a major payer would they matched up Penn St. & Miami and a #1 vs #2 showdown for the 1986 championship in what was one of the most watched college football games ever played.

Chi, the Fiesta Bowl sort of displaced the Cotton Bowl as one of the Big Four. In its early years it featured the champion of the WAC -- the good old WAC dominated back then by Arizona State and BYU --against an at-large opponent. Then when Arizona State and Arizona left the WAC to join what became the PAC 10, the WAC champion went to the Holiday Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl moved up several notches as a prestigious bowl game.
I used to enjoy the basketball scores of the old WAC football teams. Defense was purely an afterthought. Late games from Hawaii. It was fun.

Hey Rizz, I was surprised you weren't on here yesterday with this. I guess you were too busy celebrating! Phew, I know LSU is good, but that was insane. I honestly believe you guys could have scored over 80 points if you needed to. Oklahoma was helpless out there. Seven touchdown passes and over 400 yards passing and 49 points in the first half? Give me a break. Burrow just sees everything on the field and waits for the exact split-second to strike. And superhuman as he was, those receivers (especially Jefferson) are not slouches either. Not many drops or messed-up routes. That was about as thorough of a butt-kicking of a good team as you will ever see. I know any team that has won as many in a row as Clemson can't be taken for granted (and Ohio State did get screwed over a bit by the officials), but I can't see them knocking off LSU. That is one monstrous team!

They look pretty unstoppable. Would take a miracle for Clemson or anyone else to beat them.

Congrats on the win! Yeah, congrats to your Gators Desousa. First 11-win season since 2012. Looks like Dan Mullen has quickly turned things around.

Hey Rizzuto, I'm rooting for the SEC and your LSU Tigers. Good luck! Desousa, the first Florida football coach I have a clear memory of is Ray Graves. I know he was there when Spurrier won the Heisman. And speaking of Spurrier, does that guy ever look any older? The most recent photos I've seen of him he still looks like it's 1980.
